Originally our number was just 4 digits. Then it became NE4-####, then 634-, then 914-634-, then 1-914-634-.  🙂

At least I don’t personally remember party lines.

We had a party line when I was little.  I remember being taught the etiquette:  If someone is talking when you pick up the receiver to call, let them finish up.  If someone else comes on the line when you're talking, finish up your conversation with a minute or two so they can use it.

I used a phone with no dial in it once.  Pick up the receiver and the operator asked for the number and a phone number to charge the call to.  That would have been about 1983 and it was definitely an outlier even then - it was a wilderness area in a park, and the lodge just outside the park stretched a phone line out to a trailhead, probably having emergency calls or checkins in mind.  The lodge telephone operator put the call through to the outside telephone system.

Aw, she looks like such a sweetie! I hope she's doing ok wherever she is. It's unfortunate they never got back to you.
